ICMM and IPIECA present Impact Assessment, Biodiversity and Extractive Industries in China report
ICMM and IPIECA are pleased to present the report that emerged from a two-day workshop held in Beijing, China on March 24-26 2009. During the workshop, representatives from the private sector as well as government authorities, NGOs and academia discussed China´s biodiversity challenges and the use of impact assessments to improve environmental performance.
Participants recommended, among other next steps, to explore as a matter of urgency the preparation of guidance on addressing climate change in assessing impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services.
In addition, they called for the consolidation of the available guidelines on biodiversity-inclusive impact assessment, and the standardization of a “good practice approach” to assess and evaluate the impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services for the extractive industry.
These recommendations follow the five emerging themes identified during the workshop:
- The global plight of biodiversity and associated challenges.
- Principal trends in international practice.
- The changing context of impact assessment in China.
- The main challenges facing China in dealing effectively with biodiversity in impact assessment.
- Opportunities for improving practice in China.
While the workshop sessions concentrated on China, the organizers agree that the challenges and potential solutions they identified can apply to the rest of the world. That is, the messages emerging from the Beijing workshop have a wider application.
