ICMM promotes CSR in Colombia
In the small Colombian town of Cajamarca, some 300 community members and local authorities, including the mayor of Cajamarca, gathered in a school auditorium to hear a talk that was broadcast live by the local TV channel. The presentation focused on sustainability in mining and formed part of a fruitful trip to the region by ICMM’s Fernanda Diez.
Cajamarca is located near the site of La Colosa, where ICMM member AngloGold Ashanti’s prefeasibility studies have stirred interest in the local community.
The talk, held on 30 August and co-convened by BioTolima (a local environmental NGO) and APROMINCA (Asociación para la promoción de la minería responsable en Cajamarca – Association for the promotion of responsible mining in Cajamarca), had an overwhelmingly positive response.
Luis Hernando Parra Arias, of APROMINCA, said that “the criteria offered by ICMM are of crucial use to the community in weighing up costs and benefits” of the expected project.
Alejandro Echeverry Almanza, president of the environmental group BioTolima, said: “Today we have a clearer understanding of what constitutes responsible and sustainable mining, which represents a fundamental contribution to our organization and to the community of Tolima.”
Ms Diez also presented at an event organized by local labour groups in Ibagué, and to a lively audience of over 70 academics and students from Tolima University.
There was considerable interest in ICMM’s work on how mining can help stimulate socio-economic development and poverty reduction.
These engagements followed a talk at a seminar in Bogotá, where Ms Diez spoke on “CSR: A priority for the mining sector in Colombia”. The event was co-organized by CEETAL (Centro de Estudios Estratégicos para America Latina) and the Government of Canada.
ICMM was represented in a panel on international trends and best practices, together with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Colombian Chapter of the World Business Council on Sustainable Development.
There were keynote speeches from Julie Gelfand of Mining Association of Canada (ICMM member) and from Colombian authorities from the Mining Ministry.
