PROJECTS
Preventing Fatalities
Accidents devastate lives and reducing them in the mines and metals industry is a priority for ICMM.
ICMM members are committed to ensure their employees’ health and wellbeing and our goal to reach Zero Harm.
This means that ICMM members take all practical and reasonable measures to eliminate workplace fatalities, injuries and diseases among our own employees and those of contractors.
What is ICMM doing?
We are working to achieve the goal of zero fatalities. The first steps include:
- recognizing the dangerous nature of mining,
- putting in place a tailored strategy and
- addressing the concerns of managers and operations staff alike.
In March 2009, ICMM published Leadership Matters: The Elimination of Fatalities. This is a guide for senior leaders to help increase workplace safety; both through their personal actions and through the processes and activities they should ensure are in place.
The next phase of our program aims to look at the main causes of fatalities at mining and metal sites and provide guidance on how it can be avoided.
What will our work achieve?
The aim is to embed the ‘Zero Harm’ vision in the daily activities of ICMM members. The key aspects of this vision are:
- Developing a workplace culture which recognises that all occupation-related illnesses are preventable.
- Ensuring that there are no repeat occurrences of occupational diseases in any workplace setting of an organization.
- Companies to set and implement health andsafety standards that are simple, consistent and non-negotiable.
