ICMM co-hosts Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining workshop in Ghana
ICMM engaged in a successful dialogue on Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) at an industry workshop held in Ghana this month.
The event – organized in collaboration with the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the Minerals Commission of Ghana – brought together some 90 participants from mining companies, government, ASM representatives, local communities, NGOs and academia.
Participants identified a number of actions for government and companies, such as easing the formalization process for ASM miners and providing better access to mining areas. The need to create a task force within the Ghanaian Minerals Commission was also discussed.
A number of ICMM member companies are active in Ghana. They believe that a harmonious relationship between mining companies and local ASM operators is crucial if both parties are to maximize their contributions to the economy and livelihoods of their operational areas.
