ICMM launches Minerals and Metals Management 2020 Strategy
In the context of the second session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management, ICMM has launched Minerals and Metals Management 2020, an action plan for chemicals management in the mining and metals sector. The plan confirms ICMM’s commitment to the goals of the World Summit on Sustainable Development and supports the overall objective of the UN’s Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).
“We all share a responsibility for the materials we use at all stages of their life cycle; it is a commitment that starts at the highest level and permeates down to individual countries and organizations, which must act together to achieve the goals of SAICM” explains ICMM’s John Atherton, when expressing the organization’s commitments to support the UN’s SAICM 2020 goal.
The document showcases twenty three priority actions for safe and responsible production and use of minerals and metal products to 2020 and beyond, and has been reviewed by a key group of stakeholders, including the Secretary-General of the OECD, Angel Gurria.
“The action plan clearly demonstrates the commitment of the ICMM members to take responsibility of the safety of their products at all stages of the life cycle”, stated Angel Gurria, “I congratulate the ICMM for this Global Plan of Action and I look forward to seeing the results of its implementation”.
Minerals and Metals Management 2020 is equally relevant for the developing world, where capacity building has to be one of the priorities of organizations looking for effective chemicals management; a value that lies at the heart of SAICM.
In a letter to ICMM, Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), states that “The ICMM Global Action Plan initiative [demonstrates] commitment to the implementation of the Strategic Approach as well as providing an example for others to follow.”
