ICMM commits to mercury stewardship

A new position statement on mercury risk management reaffirms ICMM Members' commitment to responsible management of mercury which can arise through the application of pollution control during the production of non-ferrous metals.

The statement has been developed partly in response to the ongoing discussions under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which are aimed at developing effective ways of reducing the global adverse impacts on health and the environment from mercury.

ICMM member companies are already committed to reducing emissions of mercury into the atmosphere and local environment; however the Position Statement places this in a broader context of mercury risk management. ICMM members recognize that the supply of mercury to the global market needs to be properly managed, that adequate disposal and/or storage mechanisms for excess mercury need to be identified, and solutions found for problems arising from the use of mercury in artisanal and small scale gold mining.

The statement is in line with ICMM member companies’ commitment to the ICMM Sustainable Development Framework and to materials stewardship, and reflects members' desire to work with others, through ICMM, on an integrated multi-stakeholder strategy for the responsible management of mercury.
