The Aspen Institute promotes MBA teaching on responsible mining

The Aspen Institute’s Centre for Business Education held a web conference for MBA faculty teachers on the subject of mining and sustainability on Thursday 22 January.

The conference attracted some 45 participants and produced a lively debate on developing MBA teaching modules on the topic of mining and sustainable development.

Anthony Hodge, President of ICMM, spoke about social and environmental issues faced by the industry, as well as the positive contribution that mining companies can make to society.

Dr Bruce Hutton - Professor of Marketing at the Daniels College of Businessand pioneer of enhanced MBA programs and experiential learning - offered insights into how innovative techniques can be used to engage students in this topic based on his experiences working with Newmont, an ICMM member company.

During the debate that followed the main presentations, Anthony Hodge underlined ICMM members’ continued commitment to sustainable development issues during the current economic downturn.

The web conference followed a collaborative effort to develop MBA teaching materials on sustainability in the mining industry. With input from ICMM, the Institute published a white paper and a collection of teaching materials in October 2008.

Maureen Scully, Professor of Management at UMASS-Boston and co-author of the teaching collection, moderated the web conference.

A recording of the event and supporting presentation slides will be made available on the Aspen Institute website.
