'Investing in a better future' - ICMM's December Newsletter
ICMM has released the latest issue of its Good Practice newsletter. In his leader, ICMM’s new President Tony Hodge introduces the theme of “mining and socio-economic development”, which covers topics ranging from development in Africa to the role of minerals taxation in helping to alleviate poverty.
On this theme, UNECA’s Antonio Pedro describes the measures designed to enhance the role of mining as a catalyst for socio-economic development in Africa, and Peruvian Vice Minister of Mines Dr Felipe Isasi explains why mining is continuing to make a substantial contribution to his country’s wider economy.
Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold President and CEO Richard Adkerson, who became ICMM Chairman in October this year, contributes an article on ICMM’s Resource Endowment initiative.
Elsewhere Jim Otto tackles the complex topic of minerals taxation, and Rio Tinto describes the automated mines of the future. Finally we get a banker’s view of the need to manage risk and promote sustainable development, as Shawn Miller notes how the Equator Principles are making an important contribution to ethical banking.
