ICMM - International Council on Mining & Metals

Sustainable development requires complementary participation and engagement by companies, governments and civil society. ICMM conducts the majority of its projects in collaboration with other organizations, and, where possible and appropriate, incorporates input from relevant stakeholders.

By working in partnership with others in the sector to develop elements within the work program, ICMM recognizes that sustainable development outcomes depend on collaborative actions by governments, companies, communities, labour, and financial institutions.

WORLD BANK/IFC/COMMDEV

ICMM partners with the World Bank Group on a number of its projects, including the Resource Endowment initiative and the Community Development Toolkit.

IUCN - ICMM DIALOGUE

ICMM works closely with the World Conservation Union (IUCN) on a number of issues, from good practice guidance on mining and biodiversity, to Indigenous Peoples issues, restoration of legacy sites, protected areas review and landscape level planning.

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has worked with ICMM on several initiatives, including Resource Endowment initiative and the Good Practice Website.

EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES TRANSPARENCY INITIATIVE

EITI was launched in 2002 to increase transparency over payments by companies to governments. Revenues from extractive companies are often the only source of economic growth in developing countries.

ILO AND ICEM

ICMM has worked with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Union (ICEM) in opposing child labour in mining, and in seeking to improve safety in Chinese coal mining.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS ORGANIZATION

ISO is working on international guidance for social responsibility, due for publication in 2009. ICMM is a liaison organization and is providing comments to ISO throughout the development process.
