PUBLIC REPORTING

In May 2008, member companies committed to publicly report on their sustainable development performance on an annual basis, in line with standards set by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

The GRI guidelines are the leading global standards in sustainability reporting – now in their third generation (G3). They are applicable to organizations of any size, type, sector or geographic region, and have been used by thousands of organizations worldwide. GRI reporting promotes transparency and accountability in sustainability performance, as well as continuous improvement against a universal framework.

The GRI framework includes guidelines or protocols on how to report against specific indicators, as well as specific sector supplements. ICMM members are committed to reporting against the Mining and Metals Sector Supplement (MMSS).

Mining and Metals Sector Supplement

The MMSS complements the G3 Guidelines and includes supplementary reporting tools specific to the mining and metals sector. It covers issues such as processing and recycling, as well as the complete mining and metals project life cycle (from exploration to post-closure).

The supplement was developed in partnership by GRI and ICMM through a multi-stakeholder working group. A pilot version phase ran from October 2003 through February 2005.

In July 2008, a second working group was convened to finalize the supplement. It reviewed the reporting experience using the pilot version and brought it up to date with the G3 Guidelines (2006) and developed indicator protocols. Both phases included public consultations, where all interested sector experts were invited to submit their suggestions and comments on the drafts.

The final version of the supplement was released in March 2010. ICMM members are required to reporting in line with this supplement and to self-declare an application level A.
