PROJECTS
Leading Indicators

Most of the existing health and safety performance indicators are based on post-incident reports, so called lagging indicators. They provide an indication of past trends, which are not necessarily representative of future performance. The quest for a set of ‘leading indicators’ as measures that could potentially more accurately predict future events, is something that would be extremely helpful to the mining and metals industry.
Given the difficulty of predicting future events, the concept of establishing a set of leading indicators is an ambitious undertaking. It is recognised that these may well differ between companies and commodities but it is anticipated that the process involved in defining these will be similar.
What is ICMM doing?
Our long-term goal is to develop a suit of core leading indicators for use by companies.
An initial workshop on the subject was held in March 2011.
What will our work achieve?
It is hoped that the development and use of leading indicators would provide vital information that would help companies to respond to changing circumstances and take pre-emptive actions to achieve desired outcomes or avoid unwanted outcomes in the key area of health and safety.
