ICMM's John Drexhage talks about the challenges and opportunities for the mining industry in a low carbon economy
In a Responding to Climate Change (RTCC) video interview, ICMM climate change program director John Drexhage emphasized the importance of recognizing the mining industry’s role at the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), Durban, South Africa.
John Drexhage said that we must consider the three pillars of sustainable development - social equity, economic growth and environmental protection - in addressing the climate change challenge.
He added “We need a careful integration of those three elements... simply looking at one over the other does not create a truly sustainable paradigm for development.”
John Drexhage also spoke about the challenge of improving energy efficiency in the mining and metals sector.
