ICMM President talks to the BBC about health and safety as a top priority for the industry
In a BBC News interview today ICMM President, Anthony Hodge, emphasized the importance of having a culture of safety in the mining industry.
Speaking about the rescue operation at the Gleision Colliery mine in Swansea Valley, Anthony Hodge said “Our sympathies are with the trapped miners and their families and the community. Right now, of all the things facing the mining industry whether it's management, the workers, organised labour, and government, there is a tremendous emphasis on developing a culture on safety.
The issue of health and safety is a top priority not only for us as an organization but for the mining industry all over the world. And, in fact there have been dramatic changes and improvements."
He added "There is no question more needs to be done. The ideal is zero accidents, and we have a long way to go before we get there.”
