Human rights and security resource launched today

ICMM joined the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues (IPIECA), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at the launch of a first-of-its-kind practical guide to help mining companies maintain operational security while ensuring respect for human rights and humanitarian law.

The publication called Implementation Guidance Tools (IGT) addresses some of the challenges that many participants have been grappling with since the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPs) were launched over a decade ago.

A comprehensive instrument to implement the VPs, it is particularly useful to companies operating in geographical areas of conflict and weak governance.

According to Aidan Davy (Director, ICMM) users will directly benefit from the rich experiences of companies, governments and NGOs. They all have been applying the VPs in-country since their launch in 2000 and have contributed to the IGT’s development.

With many extractive industry operations located in sensitive geographical areas, the new tools mark a significant step forward in supporting local business operations and community members.

Aimed at project level staff responsible for corporate security and human rights commitment, the IGT contains four interactive modules and real-world scenarios to help companies engage stakeholders and assess the risks and impacts of their security operations. It can be easily integrated into existing due diligence and project management procedures.

The VPs are a set of non-binding principles created to assist extractive companies to balance security concerns with human rights.
