ICMM presents new technical briefing note on fugitive emissions and climate change
ICMM has launched a new technical briefing note outlining specific challenges in regulating unintended or fugitive methane emissions from coal mines.
It follows the Australian government’s decision to introduce a new carbon pricing policy that includes such emissions for the first time.
InBrief: Fugitive methane emissions in coal mining offers a systematic overview of how fugitive methane emissions arise and the difficulties associated with measuring, capturing or mitigating them.
It reviews the relevant environmental and safety implications, current efforts to address them, as well as the technological and practical limitations in doing so.
While this document is framed for the Australian context, it provides useful information to all policy makers considering the regulation of fugitive emissions in coal mining regions or countries.
