To promote sustainable benefits from mining and metals, it is imperative that industry engage and cooperate with key stakeholders in an open, honest and transparent manner. ICMM members commit to report annually on their sustainable development performance – using leading global standards to promote open and accountable management of natural resources.
The performance expectations
Developed with extensive input from NGOs, international organisations and academics, our Mining Principles establish baseline performance expectations for a responsible mining and metals industry. These four requirements define ICMM's stakeholder engagement performance expectations of company members.
ENGAGE CORPORATE STAKEHOLDERS TRANSPARENTLY
Identify and engage with key corporate-level external stakeholders on sustainable development issues in an open and transparent manner.
Publicly support the implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and compile information on all material payments, at the appropriate levels of government, by country and by project.
REPORT ANNUALLY TO GRI
Report annually on economic, social and environmental performance at the corporate level using the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards.
CONDUCT ASSURANCE AND VALIDATION
Each year, conduct independent assurance of sustainability performance following the ICMM guidance on assuring and verifying membership requirements.
