ICMM Annual Review 2008
Welcome to ICMM’s 2008 Annual Review - Embracing Change - which describes the challenges ICMM has faced in 2008 and will continue to face in 2009 and beyond.
In the foreword, incoming ICMM President Anthony Hodge reflects on his first few months at the organization. And on p.16 of the review, ICMM Chairman Richard Adkerson identifies his higlights of the past year's activities and outlines ICMM's priorities moving forward.
Elsewhere in the review, you will find a list of members and details on how ICMM is governed. It also gives further detail on ICMM's work in 2008 - highlights include:
Sustainable Development Framework
An upgraded Assurance procedure was published in 2008, which responds to changes in the practice of external assurance of non-financial reports and to the adoption of the G3 guidelines, and sets out how member companies can assure both performance against ICMM's ten principles, as well as the GRI reporting requirements.
Environment
A Mine Closure Toolkit was published. It is designed to help support the process of closing a mine in a sustainable manner, and can be implemented at any point in the life cycle of the mine.
Socio-economic Development
An ICMM position statement on mining and indigenous peoples was published, and a project set up to analyze different minerals taxation regimes and their incidence on revenues that may help to drive social and economic development.
Health and Safety
A Good Practice Guidance on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was published, to provide managers with practical information on disease management.
Materials Stewardship
Two guidance publications came out this year on REACH – the EU’s new chemicals legislation.
Relationships
A delegation of ICMM members took part in a roundtable session at the African Union Conference of Ministers Responsible for Mineral Resources Development. ICMM was also present at the ICEM’s quadrennial world congress on mining, and emphasized the IUCN's 4th World Conservation Congress in Barcelona.
