Making a difference - Annual review 2009
Welcome to ICMM’s Annual Review 2009 – Making a difference – which outlines the progress ICMM made in 2009 across its numerous work programs and activities, and provides an indication of the challenges that lie ahead for 2010.
It was a particularly important year for ICMM in 2009 as we undertook a major strategic review, evaluating our efforts to date, and considering how best to position ICMM for the future. You will find details about this exercise throughout the Annual Review.
In a joint foreword, President Anthony Hodge and chairman Richard Adkerson reflect on the strategic review process and outline our renewed sense of purpose and direction moving forward.
Other highlights include:
Sustainable Development Framework
For the first time, ICMM conducted an assessment of the progress that each member company is making against their commitments under the Sustainable Development Framework.
ICMM collaborated on a GRI-led multi-stakeholder process to finalize the Mining and Metals Sector Supplement. Three new position statements were approved by Council – on transparency of mineral revenues, mining: partnerships for development and mercury risk management.
Socio-economic contribution
A report on minerals taxation regimes, two guidance documents on human rights and one on artisanal and small-scale mining were published. This year also saw the creation on Mining: Partnerships for Development – a new work program harnessed under the umbrella of the Resource Endowment initiative.
Environment
A policy on climate change was released in November. A workshop was held on integrated mine closure at the 29th PERUMIN Convention in Arequipa, Peru in September. The scoping exercise on water and mining was finalized.
Health and Safety
A guidance document on health risk assessment was released, as well as a short guide for CEOs on the prevention of fatalities.
Materials Stewardship
At the UN’s Second International conference on Chemicals Management in May 2009, ICMM launched its action plan for chemical management in the sector – Minerals and Metals Management 2020.
