FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is ICMM?
The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) was established in 2001 to improve sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry. Today, it brings together 21 mining and metals companies as well as 31 national and regional mining associations and global commodity associations.
2. What is ICMM’s role in the mining industry?
Its overall goal is to facilitate improved member performance under the Sustainable Development Framework. ICMM allows members to act collectively to develop good practice standards for the industry as a whole.
3. Does ICMM campaign for better practice within the mining industry as a whole?
ICMM is not a campaigning organization. Its goal is performance improvement through dialogue based on a platform of consensus and voluntary collaboration.
4. How can a company join ICMM?
To become an ICMM member, a company must follow ICMM's member admission process. Approved by ICMM's Council of CEOs in May 2010, it aims to make the process of applying for ICMM membership more rigorous and transparent.
The five stage process involves prospective members providing information about their businesses and undertaking a gap analysis against the ICMM membership requirements. They then obtain independent assurance over this information, after which it is submitted to an independent expert review panel for consideration.
Companies that are interested in joining ICMM should contact the President’s office.
5. How can I get hold of ICMM material?
All ICMM material is published online and is available to download in the Library section of the website. If you would like to receive a print copy of any of our publications, please contact us at info@icmm.com.
